THE GREEN RIVER

WORLD CLASS FISHERY
The Green River tail water below Utah's Flaming Gorge Dam is one of North America's premier trout fisheries. World famous for its crystal green waters and multitudes of cagey trout, Utah's Green River is a magnet for fly fishermen and recreational rafters alike. It is part of the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. This was my office for ten years. I was a licensed guide for Trout Creek Flies Outfitters.

TROPHY LAKE TROUT
Yes, there are fish in the lake too. Tommy Knight, Green River Guide, took this monster on a fly. I believe it was his own Clouser Minnow variant. Flaming Gorge Reservoir is the former world record holder for several species.

 • ARCH DAM BOAT RAMP
Looking down from the angler's trail. The ramp isn't always this deserted. Some days, boats are launching four across, with more backed up the road, waiting their turn.
 • ARCH DAM LAUNCH RAMP
This is at a pretty low flow, maybe 800-900 cfs. I've rowed and fished it at 10,400. At that flow, the water was lapping the bottom of the restroom doors, the red brick building at right.
 • CAMO JERRY
Frequent visitor to the Green, Jerry always fishes in camouflage. And always nymphs. No matter how good the dry fly fishing, he just keeps on slaying them on the nymphs.

Both boats are guides. The boat on the beach has just launched and rowed down.
 • THE GREEN RIVER
Looking down on Guide Beach. Oddly enough, before the dam was built, this stretch of the Green was usually red with silt, like much of the present day Colorado. Too thick to drink, too wet to plow.
